Field bindweed at first glance may seem like a harmless flower, whose inflorescences are white or pale pink attract the eye. However, this plant is admired only if it is found in the wild. For gardeners and gardeners, this flower becomes a real punishment.
Negative moment of the appearance of a bindweed on the site
Bindweed, like all curly representatives of the plant world, needs support. Any stick can become it, and for the absence of such a stick – a simple blade of grass. Bindweed so entangles plants planted in the garden that it significantly slows down their growth. In addition, the weed pulls useful substances from the soil, which are also necessary for cultivars. A strongly overgrown bindweed blocks the access of the sun to the plant, whose shoots are used as a support.
Due to its characteristics, this flower displaces other cultures from its territory.
It is impossible to remove the weed stems just like that, they have to be unwound like a rope, with special care not to damage the shoots used as a support. If you pull, as is customary, on the stem, the leaves and stems of the cultivated plant will be damaged.
Another way to unravel the shoots is to trim them with scissors. If this is not done, then over time it is possible to obtain impenetrable thickets on your own site.
Ways to destroy bindweed
All the proposed methods for ridding a summer cottage from an invasion of a bindweed cannot provide a guaranteed positive result. You will need to carry out weed control several times over a short period of time. Only in this case can success be achieved.
When developing weed control tactics, some features of this species must be taken into account.
- It can not be cut with a cultivator. In this case, the root is divided immediately into several parts that give life to new flowers.
- In areas where the flower is common, you can not dig up, as the consequence of such actions will be the spread of the weed even over a large area.
- A serious threat is a flower during its flowering. One specimen produces a large number of flowers, becoming the source of thousands of seeds, which, in turn, will spread over a large area. Each seed is able to turn into a full-fledged plant within four years. After this period, seed germination is significantly reduced.
Having discovered a malicious weed – a field bindweed at its site, it is necessary to make every effort to prevent it from growing full-fledged long shoots. When cutting the lashes, the development of the plant is disturbed, it does not receive enough nutrition, and as a result, the root is depleted, which, in turn, leads to the death of the whole weed.
The easiest way to control the weed is to cover its stems with a dark film. Without the sun, the bindweed perishes. Useful species are planted in the slots of the protective film.
If possible, in early spring, it is proposed to plant mustard, fatseliya, rape. These plants are not afraid of cold weather, develop rapidly and inhibit the growth of the weed itself. The shoots of these plants also give a dense mass, blocking the access of the sun to the bindweed.
Sunflower and corn have a well-developed root system. They can be successfully used when cleaning the area from bindweed. Their roots will not allow weed roots to develop.
The bindweed has its own preferences in terms of soil conditions. Weed prefers acidic soils. It is possible to change this indicator by adding ash or lime to the soil.
Use of herbicides is allowed only as a last resort. But even so, there is no guarantee that a small part of the plant will not survive and spread. Processing should be carried out within three years. When using chemistry, the bindweed stops only for a while.
The maximum result can be obtained by using immediately a whole range of measures, then the flower will not have time to adapt.
